Machine learning is a type or subset of artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence, on the other hand, is a broader term than machine learning, which means that while you could call machine learning artificial intelligence and be correct, delineating ML from AI is likely more helpful. What\u2019s more, calling artificial intelligence machine learning is a non-sequitur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In other words, while all types of machine learning fall into the category of artificial intelligence, not all types of artificial intelligence (of which there are many) are considered machine learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Microsoft Azure defined AI as \u201cthe capability of a computer system to mimic human cognitive functions such as learning and problem-solving.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How does it work? Microsoft Azure continues: \u201cThrough AI, a computer system uses math and logic to simulate the reasoning that people use to learn from new information and make decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Machine Learning, Defined<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As Microsoft Azure puts it, machine learning \u201cis an application of AI\u201d created through \u201cthe process of using mathematical models of data to help a computer learn without direct instruction\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What this means, in practice, is that machine learning technology is designed to \u201clearn\u201d on its own (hence the \u201clearning\u201d in \u201cmachine learning\u201d), creating efficiencies in automation when trained correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Does NLP Differ From AI\/ML?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019ve ever heard of natural language processing (the technology that undergirds such programs as Google Gemini<\/a>, ChatGPT<\/a>, and Claude AI<\/a>) that is, itself, is closely intertwined with machine learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
